Rachel Rears Her Ugly Head

Waldini:

Either of you watch the James Blake-Donald Young match last night? I was surprised Young took it to him like that especially when he look overmatched in getting beat 6-1 in the first set. Young stunna stepped though pushed Blake to 5 sets. Young's potential is definitely there, just wondering what he will do with it...

On a somewhat related note, what's up with forcing the bruhs to play this early in a Grand Slam. Racial man RACIAL....

Gangsta D:

You black people are always playing the race card!

We keep seeing that Young has potential, but he's got to start realizing it at some point. Otherwise, he's gonna go to waste. But maybe this will be a springboard of sorts. The American men need someone, ANYONE, to step up.

Waldini:

Cablasian man cablasian :-)

Wifey was telling me that Young has gone through 4 coaches already. Apparently his family is very hands on and Donald is pretty sensitive. So when any of the coaches tried to give him critiques neither Young or his parents appreciated it. Which meant the coaches were shown the door

Gangsta D:

If that's true, he'll never realize his potential. Gotta tighten up those panties if he wants to be great. Hell, he's not even good right now. Too bad.

Paella For Everyone!

Da Realist: [7/3/08]

These next two matches will tell you all you need to know about Roger Federer's heart. Is he truly a champion for the ages? Or is he just a supremely talented player that doesn't have the fortitude to fight. We are about to find out this weekend for sure. Nadal is coming and Roger's moment of truth is here. If Nadal beats Roger here, on grass at Wimbledon, after destroying him the last 3 seasons at Roland Garros, I will never say he's a better tennis player than Pete Sampras again. I may say he's more talented, but I'll never say he's a better player.

In fact, I will never put him at no 1, even if he wins more titles than Sampras. To me, heart means just as much as skill.

Gangsta D:

I'm not worried about Fed on grass. He's not gonna let Raffa come into his house and take a dump on his kitchen floor. Not gonna happen.

Waldini: [7/6/08]

Ya'll were saying, lol

You still questioning about TMF's fortitude? Yes, he lost but he came back from 2 sets down and took Nadal to the limits in the final set. Great match. Actually both the ladies and men's finals were good or better.

Gangsta D: [7/7/08]

I have to admit, I had this pegged wrong. I didn't think there was a chance that Raffa could beat him on grass. I thought it was a wrap. Is this the end for TMF? He showed heart, coming back from down 2 sets. Can he show the same and rebound at the US Open? Raffa is definitely the best in the world at this moment. It's his world. This dude is banging the best groupies right now. Damn him:)

Da Realist:

nah... somewhere deep inside, i knew. roger is a different player when rafa is on the other side of the court no matter what the surface is. rafa has beaten him on clay, grass and hardcourts. rafa is in his head. roger quit at the french open the last two years. he almost lost to him last year at wimbledon. i was not surprised at all. even when it was extended to the fifth set, i knew roger would find a way to lose.

he doesn't like to fight. no, that's not quite right. maybe i should say, he doesn't like to fight to the death. there is a point where Rafa is willing to go that Roger isn't. Even on a court better suited to roger's game.

Gangsta D:

I didn't see the match live, but from the highlights it looked like Rog was sure nuff fighting to the death. Especially in the 4th set. Maybe he's just lost his fastball.

Da Realist:

He showed heart, but...

Roger is a different player when he plays Nadal. The big points become BIG points. He loses concentration and shanks a lot of balls into the net or hits long or wide. Look at the unforced errors in his matches against Nadal and look at them against everyone else. The dude does not like to fight.

In terms of skill, no one is better. But now a weakness is surfacing that players are starting to realize. "If you can somehow get Roger into a dogfight, he'll fold." The question is, how many are talented enough and hungry enough to push him there? Nadal is the only one that can consistently do it right now, but Roger better start looking out for Djokovic on hardcourts. Read more!

F--- Wit Europeans Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')

Da Realist:

sorry federer....i feel the same way. you quit.

When you show up on Centre Court wearing a monogrammed blazer, 6-0 is
inexcusable. That wasn't about domination. That was about heart. Or a lack
thereof.
Gangsta D:

That's wild. I didn't see the match, but that's crazy that Fed would just lay down. What's been up with him the last six months?

Da Realist:

well, he quit last year at roland garros too, just not as blatantly as he did this year.

supremely talented player but he doesn't seem to have any FIGHT in him.

Gangsta D:

That's pretty disappointing. This has to kill his legacy doesn't it? He'll still be considered one of the greatest, but not the greatest. Or, if he wins the French next year will all be forgotten?

Da Realist:

there's still time to decide whether he's the greatest. he's almost certainly the most skilled.

they're marks against him. if he wins the french, an argument can be made that he was the best combination of skill, heart determination and focus (even if his skill level greatly out-distanced his heart). of course, someone could also make a counter-argument that heart can trump skill and someone like sampras would find a way to beat federer in a win-at-all-costs match.

Waldini:

maybe it's a European thing since I saw it in Dirk in the '06 Finals, TMF last wknd, and Gasol last night (well the whole Finals so far)

Da Realist:

even at his worst, most vulnerable moment...don't put roger federer and pau gasol in the same sentence. good God that guy is soft.

Waldini:

Marshmallow soft! Did you see the game last night? It's KG for chrissake not Shaq

Gangsta D:

Don't you ever go against the family in the midst of the "enemy" again! lol

Waldini:

I'm sorry Don Dialleone. Gasol is giving maximum effort on both ends of the court, lol

Willis Reed, Clay, A Fox, A Hound, A Panda

Waldini:

I could sense Realist rolling his eyes along with me as I heard Mark Jackson, Stuart Scott, and others refer to Pierce's return to the court as shades of Willis Reed :-(

Da Realist:

DAMN you were dead on!!!

Waldini:

Sometimes you just know these things....I have to swear off watching ESPN for awhile because of that. It wasn't even Birdish (circa '91)

Gangsta D:

You're assuming that the 30 secs of the game he watched, coincided with that moment:)

Da Realist:

Sign of the apocolypse...

I watched the 2nd half of last night's game, but...

I requested the day off to watch Nadal vs Djokovic in today's semifinal at Roland Garros!

Gangsta D:

Nadal can't lose, so why bother?

Da Realist:

I'm still holding out hope...

If Djokovic can somehow extend him to 5 grueling sets...Federer may just have a chance

By the way...before i get back to the match...

If the trailers are any indication, Kung Fu Panda is going to be HILARIOUS.

Gangsta D:

You think Kung Fu Panda is gonna be hilarious?!? Can it match the adventure of "The Fox & The Hound?" This newfangled 3-D animation is bogus. It's all pixel-y, artificial, and corporate. It can't match the animation of the 80's. Those movies had heart, warmth, and passion. These new cartoons make me wanna vomit in a bucket, burn the bucket, and piss on the ashes.

Waldini:

You didn't like "The Incredibles"? That was a good movie. Not all of them are half bad. But if it makes you feel better "I'm a Fox, I'm a hoooouunnnnd dog"

Gangsta D:

You must not have got much sleep last night. You usually pick up on my sarcasm:)

Da Realist:

Thanks for jinxing the match...

Gangsta D:

Yep, totally my fault. Has nothing to do with the fact that Nadal is unbeatable on clay:) Read more!

Trouble Ahead For TMF?

Da Realist:

TMF goes down in the semis to Djokovic...in straight sets no less.

Gangsta D:

Can't win them all. I guess now everyone will question whether he still has it or if he's ready to fall from his perch. I would not put money on that any time soon.

Da Realist:

Djokavic just outplayed him. It happens. Well, it doesn't happen that often to roger but still...

I think Roger is getting close to the point where he needs to tweak his game juuuuuust a little. he's always been so good that he can just play his game without taking any risks. now some of the younger guys are pushing him, meaning he has a slightly smaller margin of error than before.
Why not channel Pistol Pete and use that serve as a weapon more often and get a few cheap points? djokavic beat him from the BASELINE. And Federer's best shot (forehand) couldn't keep up today. Yet Djokavic was wheezing the last 2 sets. Why not get a few cheap points and push to the 4th set. Who knows what would've happened there. But federer kept
trying to outslug him.

As he gets older he's gonna have to take a few more risks. He has the tools. maybe one day we'll see Federer 2.0

Gangsta D:

Does he have the trust in himself to tweak his game, a la Tiger? That's the question. Is he willing to do it?

Da Realist:

We'll see. So far he has been reluctant to change his core strategy, but when you're winning 3 majors a year, who's gonna argue? It may take a few more high-profile losses before he changes his mind.

Waldini:

Well the next major coming up is the one he's never one and he didn't tweak his game after each loss from that. So does that mean it will take a loss at Wimbledon for the change to happen?

Of course, I could be overreacting

Da Realist:

Well, no one expects him to win the French so that wouldn't cause much change. But if he loses Wimbledon, there will be a little doubt seeping in. Going into New York without 1 major all year may get him to change a few tactics. But it's still early. He can still win a few majors playing the way he's been playing.

But my belief is, when this phase is over, he could win even a few more just imitating Pete (huge first and second serves, serve and volley).

He's so talented, it's ridiculous. The question is, does HE really know what he's capable of? If he stays the way he is he'll break pete's record. If he changes his game like tiger or Mike, he'll reach 20. Read more!

Suck On These Waffles, Bitch!

Da Realist:

She (Justine Henin) beat Serena at the French, Wimbledon AND the us open. Can one now say that she is the better player at the moment?

Gangsta D:

Ever since she dropped that loser Hardenne, she's been on a tear:)

Waldini:

She is the better player. She whupped, girlhandled, took her soul yada yada yada :-). I was watching it with the missus and when Henin was up 2-1 in the first set, I said it's over. Wifey said "Stop being a hater!" I said "Those girls need to stop making clothes and start practicing more"

Da Realist:

I'm just a little surprised. Although the differences in the surface isn't as profound in the women's game as it is in the men's game, it's still significant. I think serena should have the advantage at wimbledon and the US open, while Justine should have the advantage at the Australian and the French. I'm surprised Justine beat her at the W and at the Open. 3 straight times in 3 different majors, all on different surfaces.

Serena's used to overpowering and intimidating the other girls. Justine forces her to play a good tennis match to beat her. when she can't overpower the opponent, Serena can sometimes get frustrated (like the second set last night).

I think justine will beat Venus. venus is more powerful and is all wingspan and legs, but she can be wrong-footed. it should be a good match if Venus wins tonight.

Waldini:

I'm not really that surprised. Henin adjusted her game to handle Serena's strengths and force Serena to play off her game. I was joking about the clothes earlier, Serena did not look all that bad. She just couldnt adjust her game to figure out Henin's weaknesses (which last night looked like none) and expose her.

Venus was able to do that earlier at Wimbledown this year and the US Open is a favorite court of Venus. We'll see if Venus can seek some revenge on behalf of the Williams' family. Read more!

Greatness Defined

Da Realist:

So what do you think of the match yesterday?

Gangsta D:

Didn't catch all of it, but I thought Nadal was gonna take it. He went something like 3 sets without getting broken, and Fed needed two tie breakers. But Raffa spit the bit in the fifth set. When he got broken, I knew it was a wrap. You just can't give Fed an opening when you got him on the ropes.

Da Realist:

Nadal is the only guy that makes federer blink. when they play, it seems like roger plays with a monkey on his back. everything he does is more labored. things he does to other players, rafa does to him. his serve breaks down, his forehand breaks down. he gets wrong-footed. he gets frustrated. it's amazing to see, actually.

Raffa, on the other hand, does feel pressure. he was broken in the first set and 2 games later, broke right back. federer gets broken by rafa and the set is over. whoever thought federer would get broken more times than rafa ON GRASS?

it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few years. nadal is in roger's head and there's no sense denying it. maybe it's because roger is playing for history, maybe it's because he's been considered one of the all-time greats at such a young age...whatever it is, he plays nadal with a huge monkey on his back.

we know roger will be there, but will rafa be able to make it to the final at the us open? who holds the advantage there on the slick hardcourts of new york? what about slow, high bouncing rubber at the aussie?

if nadal can challenge roger in new york and melbourne, all i gotta say is...
poor andy roddick...poor james blake. because even if roger starts to slow down (he's 25), rafa is only 21 years old. ooops.

Gangsta D:

Yeah it looked like Nadal was just a couple steps ahead of Fed in the first four sets. He really impressed me. I don't think there's any doubt he CAN beat Fed on grass. He's just got to do it the full five sets. I wonder if his injury had anything to do with it. Maybe it got in HIS head. When Fed broke him in the 5th, it just looked like he broke his spirit as well. The US Open just got a lot more interesting. BTW, don't mention Roddick and Blake again until they get to another Grand Slam final:)

The Anti-Tiger...So Far

Da Realist:

interesting article

Gangsta D:

Yeah I remember reading about him a couple years ago. I always wondered what happened. He sounds an awful lot like Michelle Wie. I guess there's only one Tiger:)

Waldini:

Pretty sad....hey wasn't there a black kid in Paris that also was supposed to be tearing it up by now too?

Gangsta D:

Yeah I think that is Monfils.

Da Realist:

monfils is actually doing a lot better than donald. he's ranked higher and he just beat roddick in the rome masters.

i read alot about donald a few years ago too. he was taking a lot of heat for playing in tour events that he wasn't ready for. i never could understand why he would rather get pasted 6-0 6-2 instead of maybe winning a lower-tier event. until now. it was about the money.

one of my biggest gripes about tennis is that it is too damn expensive to be really good. i'm not talking about being andre agassi and being sent to some tennis academy. i'm talking about being a technically sound player in our own neighborhoods. tennis lessons are astronomical. it's an elitist sport when it doesn't have to be.

Waldini:

Funny side story....my mom put my sister and I in tennis camp when I was 11. It was a no frills, no thrills set up at the local club in our neighborhood. We were in class for all of 2 days when we were suddenly pulled out. I learned later that it was a money issue and no way she was spending that loot for just 2 weeks. The only thing I got to do was volley over the net :-). And that's my tennis history (drum roll please)......

Umm Justine? Yeah, Way Too Much Info Sweetheart

Gangsta D:

You guys hear about this?

No, I didn't panic. I knew I was not starting that match well. I can tell you, I had a horrible night. My herpes came out again, and I said to my doctor, "Well, I see everything is fine, it's great."

Da Realist:

is this real?

Waldini:

That's nasty!! When I saw the Q & A I went the WTF??? Could you imagine her sores breaking out during her postgame victory speech? All you would need is Flava Flav to say "Yo Jus ya time's up G, I need your clock"

I guess we can count on seeing Justine in a few Valtrex commercials now, huh? Read more!

Outrageous Tennis Quote Of The Day

Da Realist:

From Serena Williams (following her loss to justine henin)

"I just pretty much stood back and let her take advantage of me," Williams said with her parting words. "And I feel violated."

Worst Position To Be In?

Da Realist:

All of these scenarios assume there is no time left (unless the sport doesn't incorporate time)

You're the best player never to have won a title. your team is down 2 in game 7 of the nba finals. you take the last shot but was HACKED with no time left. you are about to take 2 free throws to try and force overtime.

You're down 3 in the super bowl. you're the all-star kicker the team brought in for this moment. you've never won a super bowl. this 35 yarder will decide your team's fate.

Us open. this was YOUR moment. you were up 2 sets to none. he came back to win the third and a heartbreaking 4th set. it is now 5-6 in the 5th. you just had a return scream right by you so fast it looked like a blur. 2 championship points for your opponent. 15-40 your serve...

Master's. you started the day with a 3 stroke lead. some player 2 groups ahead of you shot a -70 and stormed to the lead. you have a tricky 6-foot birdie to force a playoff on the last hole.

Which is the WORSE position to be in?

Gangsta D:

I'd have to go with the kicking scenario. In the other cases, the fate is in the best player's hands. Field goals are always tricky. Kickers have weak psyches and while a 35 yd FG may seem like a chip shot, when the heat is on they can break. In the basketball scenario, if you're the best to never win, you should WANT to take those shots. In tennis, even though you may be down two points, if you play better for two points, you get to duece. In golf, it's up to you to make the birdie. Elite golfers make that put. But in football, the entire team has given it's all for 59:59, but their fate rests in the hands of a 150 lb "athlete" who probably hasn't got his uniform dirty all year? That is the worst position.

Waldini:

But in football, the team can recover as whole when the kicker messes up. Look at the Colts. I thought after Vanderjagt pulled a Norwood two years ago, they were never going to win the SB. They drop him and amazingly win it all. You know what, I just realized I proved your point :-). B/c Vanderjagt was cut and had to watch the team he also questioned a few years ago win a title.

I still don't know....I mean look at Greg Norman. The Shark never recovered from his Masters meltdown and had to live with the title of one of the greatest golfers never to win the big one.

And why no soccer scenarios on here? I can't get any love :-). 1993 Palmetto Athletic Conference State Championshiops. The Cardinal Newman Cardinals, picked to finish next to last in the conference, ride the magical wave of their 4 seniors to finishing 2nd in the conference and also marching to the tournament finals. Their opponent was perennial powerhouse, Porter Gaud, rulers of the conference for the past 5 years. PG finished 1st in the conference and had beat the Cards in both regular season meetings, 1-0 and 2-1.

The Cardinals amazingly go up 2-0 at halftime to shock of even their own fans. And how do the Cards handle the pressure during halftime? By already talking about going to someone's house to get a keg and get drunk. Big mistake, Porter Gaud readjusts their strategy, Cardinal Newman does, and within 25 mins PG has scored 5 unanswered goals. The final score would read 5-2 Porter Gaud and the Cards would have to settle for 2nd place. The one lone black starter, a junior AND voted Most Improved that season, on the team, The Wizard of West Columbia, would have to settle for a consolation prize of Burger King, courtesy of one overzealous mother/fan.

That same boy would never again get close to tasting championship success on the Varsity level. Both his soccer teams and basketball teams would mire in mediocrity his senior year thanks to the bumbling coaching staffs and backstage politics. And he also would never measure up to the family's tradition of bringing home championship trophies on any level (sniff)......

Da Realist:

All of them are tough... but the basketball and tennis ones hit me the most because i've played those sports (although, i suck at tennis)

Basketball -- you're at the line. everybody in the gym, every sports fan in america and even transplants in other countries are watching you right now. you've played 40 minutes and you're tired. sweat dripping off the dome. you have to somehow compose yourself for not one, but TWO free throws. your hands are twitching. this is the moment you've dreamed about. can you push this team into overtime? they call timeout. no one says a word to you in the huddle. they all know this is the moment. they want to give you your space, but it actually makes you feel worse.

What is everyone going to think if you don't come through? miss either one, and you're going to be mentioned all summer long. back in play. somehow you can't stop sweating. will this affect the traction of the ball? how long do i have? 10 seconds? how long has it been? i better hurry and shoot this free throw. one bounce...another bounce.. lift the ball above your head and follow through...

Tennis -- this is it! you're up TWO sets to love. you're starting to imagine the awards ceremony mid-way through the third set. you got this in the bag. you're finally going to win the big one. ooops. you just lost serve. he holds twice and wins the set. no biggie. you're still up 2 sets to 1. the fourth set is nip and tuck all the way before you lose a controversial call to set up his break point on your serve. upset, you double-fault and give him the set.

Now the crowd is in it, tasting blood, cheering him on. everybody's questioning you. do you have the balls to finally win a major? that's what going through your head the whole time. Arthur Ashe is ROCKING by the middle of the set. sean hears about this epic collapse and turns from the titans game to check it out. 5-5. your hands are sweating. your legs feel like rubber. your heart is pumping, but the crowd wants this upset. is the other guy just as nervous? just as tired? doesn't look like it. you can't concentrate. 15-30. two points from choking. you can't choke. you won't choke. DAMN, where did that come from? 15-40. DOUBLE CHAMPIONSHIP POINT. how did this happen? you decide to go out fighting. let it rip. you toss the ball up and ... Read more!

The Pistol vs The Mothereffing Federer

Da Realist:

if you're a tennis fan, you MUST be licking your chops to see this matchup! if only pete was 10 years younger...

Gangsta D:

Yeah, I don't know. If pete was in his prime, these matches would be epic. Now....eh? It'll be decent spectacle, but nothing exciting, I don't think.

Da Realist:

pete's my favorite player of all time but even in his prime he would have trouble with TMF right now on all surfaces -- even grass. and let's not even talk about clay.

the only exciting part of the match will be on pete's serve. even in his prime, pete just kind of blocked serves back and you can't let TMF have that kind of advantage on his own serve right off the bat.

if they were both in their primes...

pete would have a slight advantage at Wimbledon.

pete *may* have a slight adv on US Open hardcourts

roger with a distinct adv on Aussie Open hardcourts

roger would MURDER pete on clay

what do you think?

Gangsta D:

You're right about clay. Pete's game just doesn't translate. But on grass and hardcourts? In his prime? I don't know. When he was on, his serve and volley game was unmatched. The interesting thing is neither has/had a rival as good as the other during their playing days. Agassi was game, but he couldn't hang with Pete on a consistent basis. Nadal owns Fed on clay, but he can't compete on grass or hardcourt. I wonder how much they would've brought out in each other. Why couldn't Mama and Papa Federer have a kid 10 years earlier? lol

Da Realist:

i want to believe that, but i've seen federer take roddick's best and send it back across the net like it was nothing. he doesn't seem to have any trouble with big servers. pete's game was to dominate his serve and get one break per set -- he put all the pressure on the other guy to hold serve.

but roger would have flipped it. pete BETTER win his serve or he's got no chance at the set. my heart says go with pete, but my head says roger.

and about agassi... let's not down him too much through the eyes of history. pete won the majority of their matches, but keep in mind the majority of their matches were on grass or fast hard courts (like US Open). Agassi dominated him at the Aussie (4-0) and beat him the one time they played at the French. If most of their matches were on that slow rubber stuff or clay, then the outcome could have been a little different. it's at least something to think about. Read more!

Belgian Waffles Is Mighty Fine

Da Realist:

justine henin-hardenne. no one ever talks about her, but she has 4 slams and is playing in the semifinals of the french. she already has more grand slams than lindsay davenport and as many as jennifer capriati. if she wins this year's french she will have tied venus and martina hingis and will be just one short of serena.

yet no one talks about her at all.

Gangsta D:

She's Belgian. Most people don't even know where the Hell Belgium is. What's the last great thing to come out of Belgium? Hercule Poiroit? Plus she's not sexy. Maria Sharapova's won, what, two tournaments in the past three years? One major. People actually think she's the best female tennis player. Justine needs a makeover and renounce her Belgian citizenship.

Da Realist:

to each his own. the last cute tennis player i remember (besides anna) is gabriela sabatini. (who by the way, is even more sexy now than then. i saw her in the stands watching a match recently) besides her and anna k, none of them have been that cute to me. justine's about as cute as all the other "dolls". she's blonde, petite and she speaks french. and she wins. and she has the best backhand of all the women. what more can they want?

Waldini:

Unfortunately that will always be the issue with females and pro sports. Do you think anyone would pay attention to Danica Patrick's racing career if she was a dog? Don't you think the WNBA would be more popular if more than 1% of the player base was at least average looking? Guys like T&A Period. In tennis there wear tight clothing to accentuate that. But that means nothing to the average guy watching it if the girl has a million dollar body and a food stamp face. Henin-Hardenne is a phenomenal player. But in the majority's eye she's not eye candy. Steffi Graf and Martina Navratoliva (sp?) forced people to pay attention b/c they were racking up Grand Slams like crazy

Gangsta D:

She doesn't make you wanna sell your possessions and move to Belgium. I'm not saying it's morally right, but that's just the way it works. If Jessica Alba had a backhand, she'd be "the best tennis player" in the world. Women's sports are defined by either how dope the participants are or an incredible backstory. I will agree that Gabriela was the dopest. Isn't she divorced? Who would leave her? A badass athletic Agentinian? Where do I sign up?

Waldini:

In her prime, there was no one finer in tennis than her.

Da Realist:

so what makes martina hingis so fascinating?

you're right though. winning only trumps the "lack of drama" card after you've done a LOT of winning. but isn't 5 slams enough? monica seles isn't cute, but she won like 8 or 9 slams so she's a story. same for steffi and martina navratolova. i would think 5 slams would put you on another level whether you're cute or not. but i'm not sure if that is the tennis fan in me talking or not.

Gangsta D:

Remember, Martina started to dominate as a teen. She was named after Navratolova. Incredible backstory so to speak. Plus it helps if you win Wimbledon & the US Open. Winning the Australian & French don't quite add up. Has Justine won Wimbledon? If she does, her cache will go up. What she really needs to do is leak a sex tape. think she'll get some press then:)

Da Realist:

it's no doubt that wimbledon is the most prestigious slam. if you could choose one slam to attend which would it be? i like night matches so that knocks out wimbledon and the french. i heard the australian open is the most fan friendly but there is something about raucous new york under the lights...
